I'm in Houston so it is hot when I start it up. I pull the choke out a notch or two (not all the way). I let it run for a minute. Choke in and off I go.

When it was cold (40's), I would start it with the choke all the way out, let it run for 2-3 minutes. Ride it for a minute or two and then put the choke in.

I have not had any other bike experience. This is what works for me. I don't think I have ever seen the bike blow any smoke.
